Confessions.. and Guacamole!

I have a slight confession to make. Well, more than one actually
But one thing at a time.

Right, well.. I’m not quite sure how to tell you this. But until last night, I had something in my house which shouldn’t be here.

In my living room, to be exact.

Please don’t judge me. But last night…

..I finally took down the Christmas Tree..

Now, I know that “technically”, you’re supposed to take down the decorations by January 5th, and you may think I’ve just been lazy.. but honestly, I just love the sparkle!

so adorable!

I mean come on – Who would want to pack away such an adorable Fairy?

Tiddlywink and I were seriously considering decorating the tree for the seasons.

Paints Hearts to decorate it for Valentines day

Create Colourful eggs for easter

Make paper flowers to cover it in summer..

The creative opportunities are endless!

But these ideas were frowned upon by my boyfriend (from now on known as Sunshine :D )

So we compromise -

..big tree comes down..

..Back into the box it goes..

Bye bye baubles! See you next year!

…well.. later on this year!

..and the compromise is..

Our mini tree gets to stay out all year long ;) I can’t wait to create new decorations for it!

Plus, it’s a prop for my craft photo’s.. so it has a proper use too…

So, with Christmas banished for at least a few more months.. let’s move on to my next confession..

I have a slight addiction.

Some may call it an obsession.

But I don’t care what people think. I’m in love.

With Avocados.

so much so…

That they even have their very own bowl. Yes, I have a fruit bowl, and an Avocado bowl.

Told you I was obsessed.

In fact, I can’t remember the last day I went without one..

Which isn’t helped by the fact that they were on sale recently.. how could I resist? Which leaves me with the dilemma of having several avocados turning ripe at the same time..

What’s a girl to do?

Why, make Guacamole of course!

Now, I’m not claiming this to be the words best Guacamole.. I’d have to try them all first – which does sound rather tempting…

But I will say that it’s very good.

Sunshine, who doesn’t like avocados, loves Guacamole. This one in particular.

So without further adieu, here you are. Guacamole!
Gaucamole

  • 2 Large Avocado’s, (I used 1 large and 2 small)
  • 1/2 red Onion
  • 1/2 clove to 2 cloves of garlic (I used 2 – I love garlic)
1/2 to a whole tomato (I used half)
  • 1 Spring onion
  • 1/2 to a whole red chilli
  • Juice of half a lime
  • Lemon Juice (optional)
  • A few sprigs of fresh parsley and/or coriander (about 1 1/2 tablespoons once chopped. Could use 1 1/2 teaspoons of dried instead)
  • Sea Salt and black pepper, to taste
  1. Remove the flesh from your avocados with a spoon. Pop it in a bowl, and mash it up nicely with a fork – Sunshine doesn’t like avocado chunks, so I make it fairly smooth. Leave it chunky if you like though.
  2. Dice up your red onion, spring onion and tomato – as fine or as chunky as you like.  Chuck that in your bowl
  3. Finely chop your chilli (with or without seeds, depending on how daring you are ;) ), being careful not to rub your eyes! Been there, done that, had the horrid burny pains.. Add it to your bowl.
  4. Dice up your garlic. A good tip to make your you don’t get big bites of raw garlic – chop it up as fine as you can, then sprinkle on a little salt. Now, use the flat of the knife, and smoosh down in the garlic. The salt will help turn the garlic into a paste. Once it’s nicely smooshed (what, it’s a word! :P ) add it in!
  5. Juice your lime and add that too – I only had half a lime in the fridge, which wasn’t that juicy, so I added in some lemon juice too. This is all down to taste – If you think it needs more- add more!
  6. Finely chop your fresh herbs and add them in, or throw in your dried if that’s what you’re using :)
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste, give it a good ‘ole stir around, and Viola!
  8. Transfer to a bowl and serve with raw veggies, toasted pitta bread, tortilla chips – Or like we had it tonight, on top of a bowl of chilli with salsa and raw nut cheese (more on that another time) :D

    home-made yum!

Feel free to add some diced red pepper, more chilli, sweetcorn, pomegranate seeds.. the possibilities are endless! Some recommend placing the avocado pit in the gauc once you’ve made it to stop it going brown. I’ve got not idea if it works, but it won’t hurt to try :)

Now, don’t blame me if you turn into an avocado addict ;)

Phew! Feels good to get those off my chest.

Ooh.. I think there’s one more to tell..

I might possibly… slightly…

have a teeenie tiny coffee addiction too…

Feels good to share!

Fancy a cup?

Question

Do you have any “addictions” ?

Camouflage – A Tutorial

Camouflage – it’s a rather funky pattern, isn’t it?
But let’s face it, it looks rather daunting. Lots of colours blending together – Where the heck do you start?
Well, that’s where I’m hoping to help. By no means am I claiming to be an expert here! I just figured if I could help make at least one person slightly less confuddled on the subject – well then, this tutorial will have been a success!

Right now, are you ready? (don’t worry, there’s no exam at the end of this!)

Let’s begin!

Now, I know this step seems blindingly obvious, but..

Sanding! Now I know this is obvious, but making sure your woodcut is well-sanded will help make your painting a whole lot easier. Don’t forget to brush off the dust, or you may get clumps in your paint (I sometimes use a wet-wipe to get off extreme sawdust)

(Also, If you aren’t painting on woodcuts, please ignore these sanding tips! Your sketchbook or canvas will thank you)

Next.. choose your undercoat!

I chose a sandy yellow

But you can choose any colour you like! Pale green or grey would be good choices. Though make sure the base colour is the palest, as the darker = the harder it will be to paint over. After the first coat, it may need another sanding. That’s natural (the paint can sometimes raise the wood-grain). Just give it a quick sand once it’s dry, and then another coat of the base colour.

..now for the second layer..

Deep breath! Time to apply the second layer! This layer should be darker than the first :) I chose green, but again, feel free to use any colour you like. When painting this on, think – Splodgey.

You want long blobs, round blobs, wiggly blobs.

Thin bits, thick bits, bobbly bits..

This isn’t a science! Just make it nice and wavey and not too angled. You want an almost equal amount of base coat and second coat on display. I think I ended up with more second than first, but no problem.

check out those curves.. ;-)

Next, your second layer needs a second coat! Don’t worry if you go over your lines on the second coat – just round it out and make it part of the pattern.
I won’t tell if you don’t ;-)

..the third layer begins

Now it’s your third layer! You won’t be using as much of this as your second layer. You could go darker here, but I decided on a lighter green.

Whatever floats your boat!

(..or flies your plane..)

try to keep those splodges an equal-ish distance..

And don’t forget that all important second coat of paint :) Before we begin…

The fourth layer!

Fourth and final!

This one should typically by the Darkest of them all! I chose a dark green – though here it kind of looks black! Keep those splodges going!

Don’t be afraid of making a mistake. Just work in wavey lines.

Isn’t it nice to let loose?

..reminds me a little of Rorschach ink blots..

Give it a good ‘ole second coat of paint..

And there you have it!

..and if you’re like me..

..don’t forget to paint the edges! (If you do edges, of course)

The finished work!

I like to finish mine with a quick spritz of laquer, just to seal the deal ;-)

Hopefully, that’s cleared things up a little! Now you can go paint camouflage in any colours you like! Why stop at yellows and greens? I’m sure there’s somewhere where purple and pink camouflage would come in very handy!

…just don’t camouflage it too well.. ;-)

Good luck!

Happy painting ! ♥

The tomorrow that never came…

Hello again! Well then.. at least we all know that I’m in no way psychic. My prediction last March that I’d write another post tomorrow fell slightly flat.
..Though perhaps I’d simply seen a bit further into the future than expected?
Possibly.
Or perhaps I’m just forgetful

..I can be a little bird-brained sometimes

Now, time to stop distracting you all from the fact I’ve been M.I.A for nearly a year, and time to get down to business.

Tutorials!

The lovely ladies (and gents) who follow me and Mrs. Daisymoon on facebook have expressed their love of crafty tutorials, so I’ve decided to pick up my camera, and give it a go.

Now, I’ve never done one of these before, so please bare with me.
My next post will be a little tutorial on painting in “Camouflage” style!

..Teeny sneak peek..

Now, I’m by no means an expert! But if I can help at least one person be slightly less confused. Well that’s good enough for me =)

So watch this space ♥ Ideas In The Sky’s first turotial…

..or if you don't want to watch this space.. watch this rainbow instead.

Coming soon to a screen near you…

My First Blog..

Once upon a time.. there was a little blog..
*waves*
Hello little blog! Don’t worry.. he’s just a little shy.. I’m sure if we give him a cookie he’ll come out….

There we go!
Well hello, this is my blog =] By my, I mean me. And by me, I mean Hannah-lyz

*curtseys* , nice to meet you.

Now, i’ve never written a blog before.. and i’m not quite sure what i’m going to do with this..  But everyone seems to have a blog nowadays (even my mum.. albiet.. she doesn’t actually use it.. but it exists!) So it seemed liked a good idea. As most mistakes often seem before we see sense… ahem.

So, this is going to be my little place to natter, and post random bits and bobs that make me laugh, smile, confused, or just general tidbits of info about me and my life that you probably don’t want to know, but i’m going to tell you anyway.

Such as, for example, how to make super-scrummy vegan chocolate chip cookies, like the one I tempted lil bloggy with earlier!

Or perhaps, how to take unsuspecting pieces of fabric and turn them into a cuddly, if slightly deranged, house-hold chum?

Or if you’re lucky.. how to take a piece of tin foil, some marzipan, some coathangers and a duvet, and construct a device which will allow you to contact martians and trap a rainbow in a jar? … okay.. so maybe not the last one. But that’s the jist of what i’m aiming to spout in this unsuspecting place!

It will be eclectic, but hey, eclectic’s my middle name! (well, my middle name starts with “e”, so it’s close!)
Well.. this first post has turned into a bit of a ramble, so i shall toddle off and return with more posts of randomness tomorrow! ..though hopefully.. it will be a post which makes slightly more sense than this one..
First posts are always so strange.

And just so you aren’t too lonely in my absence.. here, have some more cookies…

it's okay, you can droolYes, they are all vegan ^-^

Ciao!
